The design process is crucial to any business, whether it is creating a simple company logo, or the design of an entire corporate campaign.

Websites these days are an essential part of doing business. Every business should have one - they are as essential as a phone for business success.

But, when people look for you on the web, can they find you? When people are looking for your product or service, they generally don’t enter the name of your company or your name into a search engine. They type in what they are looking for.

So they won’t type in Mary Jones Premium Furniture, they will type in “leather lounge suites + Sydney”.

It is not much use having a website if you are buried on page 250 of Google. Most people will look at maybe the top 5 results from a search engine - that is ideally where you need to be for your search terms.
I use the term Google although there are lots of other search engines as it is the main search engine people use.

Where you appear in search engines like Google is the result of a complex combination of information - but it is one which you have control over.

Here are my top 10 simple website tips to increase your search engine rankings.

1. Delete your flash front page. Flash is a type of coding that creates animated pages. Flash front pages are pretty, but will totally stuff your rankings on the search engines. The reason is search engines look at the front page of your website as the most important page in the whole site. They expect to find information about what the site is about and what it contains. Without words, the search engine spiders can’t work out what the site is about. If you have a flash front page then delete it. You will see an almost instantaneous jump in your rankings.

2. Page titles are important. What you call each page is important. If you title your page “Home” you lose rank. Title your page with the most important words about your site. It doesn’t even have to be a full sentence Leather Lounges | Lounge Suites | Lounges Sydney is more effective.

3. Clear keywords count. Know what business you are in and work out the words people who are looking for your product or service key in to find you. There are loads of tools both free and paid to help you do this. Keywords are put into what is called “metatags” at the top of your page. You don’t see them unless you view the source code. Google is very secretive about whether they look at the keywords in the metatags - but some search engines still use them. Just make sure you use your words throughout your page and in your copy as well. Don’t overdo it though otherwise you could fall foul of keyword abuse penalties.

4. Different keywords on each page. Each page on your website is different. You need to use the keywords that are relevant to each pages contents. If you use the same words throughout the site, you are costing search positions.

5. Avoid duplicate content. If the search engine thinks you have the same thing on different pages it won’t index those duplicate pages. When it calculates whether or not you are duplicating content the spiders look at everything including your page template, pictures, format as well as words. Make sure each page is sufficiently different to avoid the duplicate content penalty.

6. Pictures have hidden messages. Each picture or graphic on your page needs to have an “alt” tag put in to help vision impaired people read your site (or to describe the content if someone has turned off all photos in their browser). You can use this to add in another keyword. So a photo on my site for example isn’t just a “man” it is a “business development consultant”.

7. Keep it fresh. Search engines like content that is fresh and updated regularly. Websites should never be set and forget - work out how you can add content in regularly. I have a blog and my newsletters. (I also constantly fiddle with bits of the site - sort of an occupational hazard!)

8. Inbound links. High quality inbound links are important. These can be links from higher ranking websites or blogs than you. The easiest way to do this is through articles and submitting them throughout online ezines. You can also comment on other’s blogs and include a link back to your site or social bookmark your site.

9. Important stuff at the top. Google has a nasty habit of stopping at about 3 levels down which means your home page, the next page down and then the page below that. If you have good stuff buried down in your website it may not be found.

10. Keep your navigation clear. Google spiders want to see a logical flow of pages throughout your site. If it can’t follow the flow it can’t index your pages. Keep your navigation path clear and logical.

Here are 6 quick tips for the sales copy on your webpages. They’re a must if you’re trying to use a website to sell anything.

1) Make your webpages conversational.

In other words, write in the same way you’d “speak.” This obviously doesn’t mean you write sloppy. A large corporation shouldn’t use the “voice” of a teeny-bopper on its corporate website.

But you’ve got to get away from that formal thing us copywriters often refer to as “corporate-ese” or “corporate-speak.” You know what I’m talking about. I’m referring to prose that goes something like this:

“Here at Walbanger and Richardson, we strive to facilitate a congruent, structured process that improves egalitarian customer relationships.”

Your potential customers read this kind of stuff and go, “Huh?”

People don’t talk like that. Not most human beings anyway.

There is no way to tell how many websites I see (and I mean real, live businesses) that put this kind of mumbo-jumbo on their pages.

A web surfer doesn’t want to be impressed with formal sounding prose. And you certainly can’t motivate anyone to BUY anything using that sort of copy either.

Tell people who you are, and what you’re offering them. And do this as simply and directly as possible. No highfalutin words … okay?

2) Gather up lots of testimonials for your web visitors to read.

How many good business owners out there don’t regularly gather (or use) testimonials in their marketing? Testimonials are especially important on the web.

One of the main reasons people don’t buy something off the net is because they’re scared of getting burned … either by a scammer or a second-rate business. Having products and services endorsed by 3rd parties is crucial to your success.

3) Make your homepage read like a personal letter whenever possible.

One main difference between a direct mail sales letter and a website is that webpages have sidebars and web links embedded within the copy. But even so, try to make all of it read as one friend simply sharing important information with another friend.

4) Don’t focus on YOU (meaning your business). Focus on your CUSTOMER (on what your business can do for them). Tell them what they’re going to enjoy when they buy your product. Describe how much easier their life is going to be when they use your service. Etc.

Let them know the “benefits” of doing business with you. It’s not about you. It’s all about your customer.

5) Use a benefits-oriented headline across your homepage instead of your business name.

This is a mistake many business websites make. Instead of using a headline that conveys an important benefit to potential customers, the business name is at the top of the page instead.

By doing this you’re losing the most important opportunity you’ve got to “hook” readers who may be interested in what you’re offering. Tempt readers to stay at your site and continue reading (instead of quickly clicking away to another site) by grabbing their eyeballs with a great headline.

6) Personalize your business site with a picture.

A personal picture of the business owner (or representative) can significantly impact the selling power of a website. Customers don’t like dealing with impersonal entities. They like dealing with real people, especially ones who understand what they really want.

This means you can put a “face” on your business by associating a picture with it. There are a great number of successful Internet marketers who do this. And even some large companies too. Personalizing your business site allows prospective buyers to relate to your message on a deeper level. This encourages trust, which is vitally important when selling anything.

Here are 6 quick tips for the sales copy on your webpages. They’re a must if you’re trying to use a website to sell anything.

1) Make your webpages conversational.

In other words, write in the same way you’d “speak.” This obviously doesn’t mean you write sloppy. A large corporation shouldn’t use the “voice” of a teeny-bopper on its corporate website.

Recently people have been asking for tips and “Do’s and Don’ts” for website design and content.

Whether you are building a new site or redesigning a current site, here is a collection of tips that you’d be wise to follow:

- Create your site with a clear hierarchy and interconnection of pages.

- Your most important pages should never be more than one click away from your homepage.

- Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.

- Offer a site map to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site. If the site map is larger than 100 or so links, you may want to break the site map into separate pages. I’m conservative; I don’t like more than 50 links on a page.

- Try to use text instead of images to display important names, content, or links. The Google crawler doesn’t recognize text contained in images.

- If you are using images, name them with your keyword phrases.

- Avoid frames.

- Avoid an all Flash site. It doesn’t matter that Google can read and index Flash. You are still better off not having a site that is all Flash.

- Optimize your site

- if you don’t know how

- hire someone.

- Create a plan for content addition

- keeping your site current with fresh content is good for the engines and your site visitors.

- If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a “?” character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few.

- Use a text browser such as Lynx to examine your site, because most search engine spiders see your site much as Lynx would. If fancy features such as JavaScript, cookies, session IDs, frames, DHTML, or Flash keep you from seeing your entire site in a text browser, then search engine spiders may have trouble crawling your site.

- Allow search bots to crawl your sites without session IDs or arguments that track their path through the site. These techniques are useful for tracking individual user behavior, but the access pattern of bots is entirely different. Using these techniques may result in incomplete indexing of your site, as bots may not be able to eliminate URLs that look different but actually point to the same page.

- Test your site for broken links and errors

- nothing scares site visitors off like a site that isn’t well maintained.

- Test your shopping cart often to make sure there are no errors that are causing you to lose sales.

- Don’t waste your thank you page

- make an up-sell offer on your thank you page. People have already bought from you and should be open to other offers.

- Test, test, test. You should be split testing or multivariate testing your pages to improve results.

- Make your opt-in box prominent and compelling. Building a list is vitally important to your business.

- Never make major website changes before an ad or holiday campaign unless you are sure you have time to complete the changes and test the pages.

- Don’t wait too long to start holiday marketing. Some campaigns (like SEO) take time to build momentum. End of summer (at the latest) is when you should start.

- Avoid Site Builders unless you absolutely must use one

- and then before you do, make sure they allow you to do everything necessary to get your site optimized. (I’ve written articles on this, it’s really important!!)

- Don’t use too much jargon or confusing language. Talk to your site visitors in a language they will understand and relate to.

- If at all possible, consult with a marketing expert to make sure your site is in tip top shape. Remember many designers know design but not marketing - and your site may be missing some of the core marketing principals and techniques.

When having a website built, it’s great to think of how you want your website to look…most designers will appreciate you having a “vision” for your site. However, do not let your vision overshadow your purpose for building the website. If you do, the site will could end up falling short of, not only your needs but also, your expectations. So, how do you avoid that pitfall? Well, in order to build a website that works—literally and figuratively—for you, the site must be functionally correct first and the visual elements used should work with the functionality.

Functional For Site Visitors & Site Owners

It is critical to keep the purpose of the website you’re building at the forefront of your mind. That’s to say, what do you want site visitors to (be able to) do while visiting the website? Are you building a community site where you want people to interact? Maybe you’re looking to sell products. Or perhaps you’re a business owner or non-profit organizer and just need an online presence so people can learn more about what you do. They’re all valid reasons to have a website built but the functional requirements for each is different. The community site needs an element that will allow site visitors to communicate with each other but the product site needs a way to process transactions and the online presence site simply needs to be informative.

Seems simple enough, right? Well, sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t.

Many of today’s websites serve multiple purposes. Some large sites may even have different purposes for different sections or pages within the website. That may result in the overall site needing a variety of functional capabilities—search result generation, form submission, multimedia interfacing, e-commerce, or even customized databases. Therefore, asking yourself, “What do I want site visitors to do / to be able to do on my website?” may seem like an easy-to-answer question but it really is a question that anyone wanting a website designed should seriously consider before contacting a web designer.

Instead, most will give up and move on to the next website in the search engine results.

• Don’t Fight What The Consumer Has Been Conditioned To Do.

Web users are accustomed to going to certain links and locations to find certain information. For instance, most web surfers automatically look to the left or top of the screen for main site navigation options; site users have also become increasingly used to being able to click on a company logo to get back to the homepage. Don’t fight these web surfer design preferences…go with it! The exception: You can consider straying from these “norms” if you’re attempting to create a specific surfing experience for your site visitors.

• Plan To Add Purposeful Content!

Don’t just put text on your website for the sake of “having something up there.” Site visitors will see right through fluff copy…especially if you attempt to fill the site with keywords to improve your search engine ranking without providing valuable content along with those keywords.

Also, think about how you speak to your site visitors. Your tone and writing style that you choose should fit the overall purpose of your site as well as the “vibe” you want site visitors to have when visiting the site. For example, if your website is going to be the equivalent of an online brochure, make sure that the design and text read as simply as a brochure would. If your site is geared towards children, use age-appropriate wording. Or, if your site is supposed to be a profit powerhouse, generating thousands of dollars each month from product sales, make sure that you have copy that sells on every page intended to sell site visitors on your product / service. Once you have determined the basic functionalities of the website you’d like developed as well as some of the aesthetics you’d prefer, the next step is to find a professional website designer to actually build the website for you. The best way to begin is to ask friends for a referral but do not stop there. Website designers have different capabilities and specialties. The referred website design company may or may not be the right provider for the job. So, the next step should be to find one or two other potential website designers. When selecting designers for your short list, keep the following in mind:

• Budget & Price: Have a budget range in mind for your website that’s appropriate for the functionalities your site requires. Let your budget determine the designers who you consider for the job. However, the designer who wins the project should be determined first by their ability to design the website as you envision and second by price.

• Professionalism: Take note of the professionalism of the provider during phone conversations and / or email correspondence. It’s indicative of what the experience of working with them will be like.

• Work Samples: Request to see work samples but do leave room for some speculation. Work samples, unless created specifically for you, are always the result of the provider’s client’s preferences and not solely the designer’s abilities. Designers can make suggestions to clients for how a website should look or operate but in the end, it’s what the client prefers that goes.

• Value-Added Services: If you will be requiring more than just web design to make sure that you have an optimal website, consider finding a provider that offers value-added options. Some value-added services that design firms sometimes offer that simplify website operation or improve website effectiveness include website hosting, website maintenance, domain services, copywriting, and search engine optimization (SEM).

When you find the professional designer that you want to work with, explain what you have in mind for your website in detail, including your functional requirements. Then, be prepared to listen; a true professional designer will have additional questions to clarify your “vision” as well as insight about what else you may need in order to have the website look and operate the way you want it to.

In today’s technologically driven society just about anyone can build a website but not everyone can build a website that works. The reality is that while there are many affordable tools and services available, there is a large number of website that are just sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Just because you can build a website doesn’t mean that the world is going to beat a path to your site. Understand that your website is like a needle in a haystack. How will you drive traffic to your website?

You can drive traffic to your website through various marketing method such as Paid Per Click (PPC), Banner Ads, etc… The problem with most online marketing is that they can be very expensive. When you are operating on a shoestring budget it is essential that you build a website that is optimize for the search engines. You can save a lot of advertising dollars by ensuring that all your web pages have quality keywords. Keywords are words or phrases that the world uses to find what they are looking for in the haystack (World Wide Web).

Getting the world to view your web pages may not be important to you. Great! All you need to do is find a reputable hosting company, register a domain name, singed up for an account, build your site, and then publish it. Note that publish it does not mean that your website will be viewable to the world (remember the needle in the haystack). Yes, building a simple website is that easy. Just make sure you find a hosting company that offers domain name (your website name) registration, hosting, and site builder tools.

Some site builder tools require a steep learning curve. If you are not HTML (Hyper Tex Mark Up Language) savvy look for site builder tool that used the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) method to create your pages.

To build a website that works require some upfront planning. After deciding what niche you want to pursue, you will need to come up with a name for your website, build a keyword list, register your website name, signed up with a hosting company, and submit your website to the search engines. All of this can end up costing you quite a bit. Although there are many hosting companies out there touting free this and free that, my experiences with these types of company are generally poor.

The average registration fee at Go Daddy is about $8.99/year for each domain name. Some company will offer a site builder for free others may charge you for that feature. Expect to pay approximately $97 if you use Go Daddy. Hostings are generally sold on terms bases. The longer the term the less you can expect to pay. Go Daddy charges about $76 for 12 month. So between your domain registration, hosting and the site builder tool you are looking at roughly $182. You will still need to find a keyword tool. Google has a free tool you can use. I prefer to use Word Tracker, which is a monthly subscription program. Finally, you might want to use a simple photo editing software such as Photoshop Element or Paint Shop Pro.

In summary, building a Website That Work is going to cost you. However, you have control over how much it cost you financial and emotionally. All you have to do is figure out exactly what you want the website to do, identify the resources that you will need, establish a budget, then go build your site. It is that simple!
